Inthefirstepisode,auniversityprofessornamedDr.Paradigmtestedhisgene-manipulationtechniquesonamarlinandalobster.Dr.Bolton,afellowprofessor,attemptedtodestroyParadigm'sresearch,andwastransformedintoaninhumanmonstrositybytheevilscientistbeforeescaping.ParadigmlaterkidnappedBolton'sfoursons—John,Bobby,Coop,andClint—totransformthemintosharks.Assoonastheytransformed,thefourbrothersateahotdogstand,andfledfromthepolicebydivingintoalakeandburrowingtheirwayintothecitybyeatingthedirt.ThebrothersplannedtocaptureParadigmsothattheycouldforcehimtoreturnthemtotheirhumanselvesandexposeParadigm'sgeneticexperiments.
Insubsequentepisodes,ParadigmbegantoconvincetheresidentsofFissionCitythattheStreetSharks(astheybecameknown)werevicious,deadlykillerswhoweremutatedbytheirfather,Dr.Bolton.ThebrothersteamedupeveryepisodetostopParadigmandhisdeadlySeaviatesfromtransformingthecitizensofFissionCityintomutantswithnofreewill.
Oneofthecharacters'favoritecatchphraseswas"Jawsome",andtheirfavoritefoodconsistsofhamburgersandfrenchfries(althoughthey'recapableofeatingjustaboutanything-evenifit'snotfood).Thebrothershavealsoexpressedanobviousandveryvocaldislikeforpizza,anindirectacknowledgementtowardtheNinjaTurtles,whoseimageiswell-knownforbeingbuiltaroundpizza.
