Gabriel'swifeVera,theLawrys'maid,isalsoapartoftheplot.WhenGabrieldoesnotreturnhome,Verabecomeshystericalwithworry.MacsecretlyasksVeratomeethiminthegreenhouse,usingherworryaboutGabrielasalure.Sheisobservedbytheothers,however,andiskilledbyHansenbeforeshecanreachMac.Thespiescutthehouse'stelephonewiressothatMacandNormacannotcallthepolice,andChelihasMaclockedupunderguard.Usinghisblindnessasadistraction,MacoverpowershisguardandreleasesFridayoutawindowwithinstructionsto"gohomeandgetMarty."StephenarriveshomeandChelithreatenshisfamilyifhedoesnotgiveherthefinalstepincreatinghisinvention,whichwasnotinthesafe.BarbarafinallyrealizeshowmuchNormaactuallycaresforher.Mactriestostallfortime,butislockedinthecellar.WhenHansengoestokillhim,Machasbrokenthelightbulbandhisadvantageoftotaldarknesshelpshimovercomethespy.MartyandFridayreturnwiththepolice.WhenFridayisspottedbyalookout,MacoverpowershimandissavedfrombeingshotbyanotherlookoutbyFriday.Afterthespiesarecaptured,StephenandNormaareofftoWashington,D.C.,withBarbararemainingbehindtocareforhernew"UncleMac."
